The rise of hipster colonialism

The proposal that foreign powers acquire land in Africa to stem migration is nothing but 'hipster' colonialism.

Last week, Germany's Africa Commissioner Gunter Nooke said that European countries should be allowed to lease land and to build and run cities in Africa as a means of stemming what he views as the unchecked expansion of migration from Africa to Europe. For Nooke, allowing the "free development" of these areas would stimulate African economies and create "growth and prosperity" and therefore, reduce the attractiveness of Europe as a destination for migration.

…… Understandably, there has also been considerable pushback. The word "colonialism" has been raised, with critics arguing that Germany, especially, with its history of violent colonialism and genocide in Namibia, Cameroon, Tanzania and Togo, has no moral authority to even table such an idea. More broadly, many African countries are still struggling to recover from the damage from European colonisation. In many African countries, land tenure is still irregular and skewed to wealthy and often white minorities, engendering generational economic exclusion.

……. Many of those speaking in favour of this proposal do so it in sterile and agnostic terms, focusing on the economic dimensions and the potential financial growth and leaving out the most important element - the people involved and affected. Underneath this is a reductive premise that human beings, and Africans specifically, are not as fully actualised human beings who deserve holistic life experiences - Africans are just labour or economic opportunities.

…..Ultimately, hipster colonialism and Nooke's proposal is yet another reminder that we need to re-centre people in our policymaking - it can't just be about money - and that the road to solutions begins quite simply with reading a history book.

The Rohingya's dark anniversary must spur global action

It is not enough to end the violence against the Rohingya. Far more must be done to ensure their safety in Myanmar.
It was exactly one year ago, on 25 August 2017, that the Myanmar military launched a murderous "clearance operation" in Rakhine State. In the space of a few months, the security forces and their proxies killed thousands of Rohingya people, torched scores of villages to the ground, engaged in widespread sexual violence, and drove more than 700,000 women, men and children to flee into Bangladesh.
.......
Myanmar has for decades pursued its genocidal policies against Rohingya, and the violence that started last year merely echoes similarly brutal military campaigns in the late 1970s and early 1990s. The world must act now to break this cycle of violence.
......
While Myanmar has announced a "commission of inquiry" into the violence in Rakhine State, this is just another smokescreen for the international community. Myanmar has a long track record of establishing similar bodies which have never led to anything but whitewashes of its crimes.

The Ratko Mladic disease infecting Europe

Ratko Mladic and war-time Republika Srpska President Radovan Karadzic (sentenced to 40 years in prison by the ICTY) started their bloody campaign in 1992. Under their command, people were mercilessly killed, raped, tortured, expelled from their homes, burned alive, and mutilated. All that was happening in the heart of Europe, while the European Union and its institutions were being established, celebrated, and praised as something that would bring hope, peace and stability for all.
........... By not reacting on time to stop mass crimes being committed, Western leaders sent a message to everybody in the world that it is OK to kill other people, and to promote dangerous, ultranationalist ideas. That it is OK to commit genocide, and the world will pretend it is something else, just a small regional conflict among some tribal people. That it is OK to be a fascist, but just call it something else..........

Ratko Mladic sentenced to life in prison for genocide

Former Bosnian Serbian commander Ratko Mladic has been sentenced to life in prison, for genocide and war crimes during the Balkan conflict more than two decades ago.
The presiding judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Wednesday found that the 74-year-old general "significantly contributed" to genocide committed at Srebrenica.
Previous judgments of the tribunal in the Netherlands already ruled that the massacre of about 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica was genocide..........
"The media in Serbia never reported on what the Serbian army, under the command of Mladic, committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Because of this, researchers say residents are confused because they don't know why Mladic is standing trial at the tribunal in the Netherlands," Subotic said.

Iran hails victory in Aleppo as Shia militias boost Syria's Bashar al-Assad

Iranian leaders have claimed a military victory in Aleppo, with the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s chief military aide boasting that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s forces would have been unable to retake the besieged city without support from Tehran.
“Aleppo was liberated thanks to a coalition between Iran, Syria, Russia and Lebanon’s Hizbollah,” said Seyed Yahya Rahim-Safavi. “Iran is on one side of this coalition which is approaching victory and this has shown our strength. The new American president should take heed of the powers of Iran.”
